[presto] AGE: 60 | GOVERNMENT | SPYMASTER | SURVIVOR | REPUBLICAN | PATRIOT |
DEVIOUS ▲ MANIPULATIVE ▼ STRONG-WILLED ▲ RUTHLESSBRIEF HISTORY: To most people, Paul-François Chauvelin is a minor government functionary, just another faceless cog with a comfortable, if too-boring-to-talk-about job pushing papers around. In person, he comes across as a friendly, harmless older gentleman. He's been around forever and keeps his head down, expressing no particular political leanings and avoiding philosophical debates as much as possible. In reality, though his personal inclinations tend republican, professionally he's a ruthless, high-ranking veteran intelligence and counter-intelligence agent who works for whomever's in power.
Chauvelin has a large network of informants and agents, but still likes to keep his hand in, maintaining a feel for the pulse of Paris, the heart of France. That's especially true now, as he sees a revolution coming, so he'll be out and about a great deal, preparing to make the switch to the new regime. This includes gathering information on, and possibly making contacts in, both royalist and republican groups. "AN AMALGAM OF SORROWS AND THE WISDOM THEY GIVE" [/presto] RAZZ ♦ ADOXOGRAPHY

PAUL CHAUVELINWell hello there! Are you interested in plotting and if so, is there any specific plots or time periods you would like to do? Personally I would love to rp back when Marguerite was an actress and how she and Chauvelin came across each other. Is that of any interest to you?

LADY MARGUERITE BLAKENEYI think that would be very interesting. I've always been struck by the gap in their ages. It wasn't so much of a big deal in those times, but still makes for a different dynamic.

PAUL CHAUVELINExactly! There is so much that baffles me, Chauvelin doesn't seem like a man with the patience to sit through a play so perhaps they came across each other at a party? Even then would they not run in different circles? How deep was Chauvelin into the Revolutionary movement when they first met? If he was quite deep into it he may have been sent to her by Robespierre?

LADY MARGUERITE BLAKENEYHe actually does have a lot of patience (has schemes that run for years, after all ) Warning, incoming pop psychoanalysis! Chauv's relationships with women have always been a bit unstable. His first love was his wife Herminie, which was one of those fiery teenage rebels things. It might have gone somewhere as they matured, but he packed her and their daughter Fleur off to America to keep them safe -- Herminie died there and he lost track of Fleur (being on the other side of the planet). He was ... I think 10 to 15 years older than Lisette, Helene's mother, and that was a virtual one-night stand. Then when he's in his 50s, revolution comes 'round again and he's one of the veteran hands steering it. He sees all these young people with fire in their bellies like he used to have, and I think he has a powerful feeling of wanting to prove that his 'soul remains alive' and that he's still got it. Then he sees Margot (who maybe even looks a bit like Herminie), young and spirited and probably has the young wolves clamoring after her, but it's the old wolf Chauv who woos and wins her. So in a sense she's right when she asks him "was I your possession, Paul?" Because though he really did care about her, she was also a trophy to him. The gulf between them in terms of age, experience, power, social status, etc. was too wide for him to consider her a partner. He saw her as subordinate and ancillary to himself, so when she started living her own life and rejected him, he was surprised, confused, and angry. Her choosing SIR PERCIVAL BLAKENEY over him was like a slap in the face. He and MARIE EVANGELINE ROQUEFEUIL are much, much, much better suited. He still sees himself as dominant (because male, if nothing else), but it's more like the Percy/Margot relationship. There's give and take, and he respects and acknowledges her as a person.

PAUL CHAUVELINAhhhhhhhh fascinating. That does make much more sense. I find to try and understand a characters motivations I tend to relate them with people around me and since Chauvelin is quite similar to my Uncle John; assuming he was restless and uninterested in the arts was a natural jump for me So if we were to do a past thread is there any specific times you would like to cover?

A teacher, a partner, a friend... a victim? (Henri's blind date set up with Marie lol) these two are many things. They kinda go together like PB&J. Together they might just make something happen..

LOL well.. to be fair.. France needs some balance. A Monarchy isn't necessarily a bad thing at all -- but it needs to change. Drastically. Those Republican ideas may just serve him well in bettering his people's lives.

Chauv&Renée: I remember that Chauv had quite the network of informants at his hand. And I am trying to establish La Renarde as a sort of aspiring informant, someone who uses things she heard on her robbery missions to sell to someone who might be interested in it, also taking requests to find out something... maybe you can work with that at all? Dunno if Chauv would trust a young girl, but maybe she can prove to be reliable?

RENÉE LAGOSSE & Chauvelin Chauv doesn’t trust anyone. Well, okay, he trusts Marie (not realizing she’s consorting with Percy Pimpernel, poor man). But he appreciates and respects competence and snitches sources who prove reliable, so she could well be on his payroll. And since he’s aware of the trouble brewing in Paris, he’s probably even more interested in the 411 than ever. (On the streets, he’s a shadowy figure known as The Falcon, btw)

Oh yes, I remember the Falcon Good times, when the Falcon was nearly brought down by a certain Sparrowhawk ... The question now is... how would she have come into his service? would she have been approached?

Definitely, though not by him personally. He’d probably only deal with her directly after she’d been established as reliable and if she had some really good info for him (and insisted on it).
Sparrowhawk, now there's a name from the past.

Marie: " PAUL CHAUVELIN , SIR PERCIVAL BLAKENEY , you two are the EPITOME of England vs. France in person. Listen boys. You cannot rip me apart just because I -happen- to see good traits in the both of you. Percy saved my life and quite a few other innocent people. Paul I love with all my heart and that will never change. Now -behave- yourselves. Because I full well intend not to have a duel in the middle of the drawing room."
