THE DREAM
Helene can be described as a true romantic; she upholds the same ideals as Rousseau and believes that living alongside nature is the ultimate dream. Simplicity is a key component; she believes that everyman should be born free. Free to govern themselves and not to be ruled by a cruel hierarchy, where equality among men does not exist. Like many of the romantics, she believes in the republic, and is willing to stake her life alongside those who hold the same dream. Many of her morals have been influenced by those around her. She has seen in the actions of others, how important it is to fight for a society that governs with these beliefs.
A part of Helene has never really grown up; she still holds all her childhood dreams and wishes close to her heart. She is rather naive to the ways of the world, as she has been over protected by her father and finds her new way of life a challenge, but one she is willing to face. Some might say she is a fool for not going to England and risking her life in Paris. Much like her mother Helene is extremely passionate and impulsive, which perhaps is a huge flaw for Helene as she often acts on impulse and rarely thinks of the consequences. Her hot headed passionate nature has got her into trouble on many occasions and most likely will continue to get her into trouble in the future.

THE MIRROR
Helene holds an extreme likeness to her mother. In particular she shares the same dark half-moon eyes and button nose as her mother. There’s nothing remarkable about Helene’s appearance and she has never held much pride in her looks and clothing. There has always been a part of her that is wild, her various governesses could never tame her to dress and behave like a Lady of her background should have. Helene has waist length dark brown hair that can’t be described as straight, or curly, it almost cascades down her back in a thick wave like manner. Her hair is impossible to tame, and frankly Helene holds no patience in trying to do much with it. Shes never been a fan of fine gowns, and in her younger years her wardrobe did not lack for them. Helene always felt most comfortable in simple cotton and wool, anything that kept her warm while out in the countryside would do.
FAMILY
Lisette D’Aramitz - Birth Mother
Valentin Gautier (Chavelin) - Birth Father
Marquis de Rochambeau - Adoptive Father
HER STORY
Helene was born to Lisette D’Aramitz in the early hours of a crisp autumn morning. Her mother was a single parent and subsequently, was shunned by the entire village of Barbizon, for having an illegitimate child. Lisette had taken the eye of a kindly gentleman the Marquis de Rochambeau, her spirit captured his heart and he hid the two behind the high walls of his manor house. Helene’s mother’s spirit was much like Helene’s. She wasn’t happy hiding behind the safe walls, she wanted to be out doing things, exploring the mysteries the world held for her. She soon learnt that the village didn’t take kindly to her presence. She had acted against God’s will and had relations out of wedlock. Lisette was reduced to staying inside the manor house with her child.
While Helene grew into a strong healthy young girl, Lisette’s health dwindled until she died nearing Helene’s 13th Birthday. Helene believed it was being kept inside the home and gardens that killed her. Despite the Marquis caring hand, Lisette couldn’t stay strong enough for him or her daughter. Up until then, Helene had lived contently playing in the grounds of the manor and her playroom. She had a tendency to get herself into trouble with the governesses. She would always manage to get her dresses covered in dirt or snag them on bushes and trees. She was fascinated by all things to do with nature. Plants, trees and animals all captured her interests. She was bored of the grounds and fascinated with the forests that she could see from her bedroom window.
She was fifteen when she first began to sneak out from the grounds to explore the forest; it was there she met Henri. The two became fast friends, talking and playing in their forest. It was their playground and the two enjoyed being able to escape the constraints of their lives. Things were good for a while, until Helene and Henri ventured into the village, it was there one of the local villagers recognised Helene and started to make nasty jibes about her ‘whore of a mother’. Enraged by this, Helene had to be escorted home by the local law. She was forbidden to leave the grounds or see Henri again, although Helene suspected this was Henri’s parents’ wishes.
Helene could not be kept inside for long and she was soon sneaking out again to meet with Henri. Over the next couple of years, Helene’s feelings for Henri changed; he was no longer just her best friend. She loved him and was inspired by all his aspirations; however her world was also changing for the worst. They were suspected of financing and supporting the rebel cause, due to her association with Henri, - Henri began gathering rebels in the forest.
One late evening Helene was awoke by her father. The local priest had contacted them, to warn them that they had been listed as traitors to France and were wanted by Gabrielle Damiens. Helene was forced to leave her home with her father, to head to the docks where a boat was waiting for them to take them to England. The thought of leaving Henri and her country terrified Helene, she couldn’t bear to live without him. She was able to convince her father to leave her in a local convent, pretending she was too ill to travel the long journey. She stayed there for a week, before she was finally able to break out of the convent and return to the forests where Henri was.

Helene sighed, placing the bowl in her lap she observed the man curiously. there was something about him that sparked her curiosity, and she couldn’t help but feel safe in his presence despite the danger he presented to the camp. she was however, not foolish enough to lower her guard and was mighty curious as to why he was of such interest to henri. she didn’t break her gaze with him, sensing only too well that he might perceive that as a sign of weakness or submission. she after all was not the one tied to a pigsty, rotting in filth.
Helene was battling with her anxiety; she felt as if she were on a precipice and at any moment could fall into its depths. how she wished henri had spoken to her before he had left, the very subtext of his actions made her nervous. there was more to today than she was being told and she resented it greatly. spending time with this stranger was passing the fleeting moments, but her mind kept drifting off to henri and the troops, praying that they would return safely.
She frowned at his words as she responded, ‘I would have thought your pride was already broken’ she said, referring to his current situation, living amongst the pigs. she paused for a moment before continuing, ‘of course if you’re not hungry then there are plenty more mouths to feed here’ she shrugged.
‘What are you doing here in fontainbleau?’ she demanded. the local village was small and rarely got visitors, there wasn’t much around and she was curious as to what a man like him would be doing so close to camp. she feared he would prove a threat to the camp and to henri. that her instincts that were telling her he was no threat were wrong, and in fact he would prove to be the biggest danger of all. there were so many lives at stake now in camp. not just soldiers, but women and children whose lives were threatened in the village and were now forced to reside here. things were looking bleak for the people and it broke her heart to see it. her only hope was Henri.
